Dec 13, 2016 That the brightness slider stops working is a bug. I have the same issue on the touch bar of my 15' Macbook. When touching on it you see that it is selected but the 'brightness slider animation' doesn't appear. When extending the touch bar you could still adjust brightness by tapping on the brightness buttons.

The application is available for free and when downloaded, adds itself as an icon to the menu bar that allows you to adjust you brightness very quickly, using your mouse.
- Brightness adds a menu bar item for adjusting the brightness of your Mac's built-in display. If your MacBook or MacBook Pro has a backlit keyboard, Brightness adds a second menu bar item for adjusting it. Please note that Brightness cannot currently control the backlighting for external displays like the Apple Cinema Displays.
- Manually adjust brightness On your Mac, choose Apple menu System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display. Open the Display pane for me Drag the Brightness slider to adjust the brightness of your display.

The primary adjustment for the brightness should be in the monitor itself. OS X includes a tool to help you adjust the settings, by showing you patterns with instructions about how to adjust the monitor's settings. You are also prompted to adjust the output from your Mac at the appropriate time. If you make adjustments from the wrong place first (by not using the tool) you may get a less pleasant, effective, and more fatiguing image. To use the tool, go to System Preferences > DIsplays > Color > Calibrate.
